Institute History

 

The Cajal Institute (IC) is a Research Center in Neurobiology that belongs to the Spanish Research Council (CSIC). The IC originates from the Laboratorio de Investigaciones Biológicas, funded in 1900 by order of HM the King Alfonso XIII on the occasion of the Moscow Prize to Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934). Following the award of the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine (1906) and the creation of the Junta de Ampliación de Estudios (1907), Cajal was appointed as President of the Junta. A royal decree by king Alfonso XIII established the construction of a new building and the appointment of Cajal as the first director in 1920.

The building, finally inaugurated in 1932, was located in the hill of San Blas changing its name to honour the memory of its founder. Since its origins, the institute´s activity has focused on the structure and function of the Nervous System. Thus, this is the oldest Neurobiology research center in Spain. Along its more than 100 years of existence, renowned scientists and professionals have spread worldwide and contributed to the remarkable advancement of Neurobiology. Today, a new era of changes can be announced to the society as a result of the implementation of the scientific progress. The IC is prepared to confront the future challenges and to maintain the leading role in Neurobiological research in Spain, always keeping in mind that the final destination of knowledge is the well being of the society.
